Many of Canada’s immigration programs require applicants to have “skilled work experience”. (For example, applicants applying for permanent residency status under the Canadian Experience Class require the applicant to have 12 months of skilled work experience.)

To determine whether a job is “skilled”, the Government of Canada uses the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system to classify jobs. And jobs that are considered “skilled” are those in the following groups:

• Skill Type 0 (zero) – Management jobs (eg. restaurant managers, mine managers, shore captains (fishing))
• Skill Level A — Professional jobs. People usually need a degree from a university for these jobs (eg. doctors, dentists, architects)
• Skill Level B — Technical jobs and skilled trades. People usually need a college diploma or to train as an apprentice to do these jobs. (eg. examples: chefs, electricians, plumbers)

A broader range of jobs are classified on the NOC Matrix 2011.
