[00:25] Are you in a common law relationship? Please note that common law partners are not afforded the same legal rights as married couples under Estate legislation or Family Law. Under Estate legislation, if a partner passes away without a will, a married spouse may be entitled to a preferential share. Under Family Law, a married spouse is entitled to equalization of Net family property. A common law partner would not have the same rights. Accordingly, it is prudent to prepare a cohabitation agreement to document your financial and living arrangements and will to protect your loved ones. If you are a common law partner, please visit landmarklaw.ca To get started with your cohabitation agreement or will.
